Psychologist Long Island

No matter where you live, be it on Long Island or anywhere else, everyone has had “bad days” where the world takes on a very bleak texture and tone. For some of us these uncomfortable feelings pass, and we come to see the world in a much more positive way. Grinning to ourselves as we think, “Wow. I just felt so down, or irritable, or angry, but I’m glad that feeling passed.” However, for others of us these feelings don’t pass. We feel trapped by a cascade of negative thoughts which only serve to perpetuate these uncomfortable and often painful feelings, impairing our ability to live a complete and healthy life. These are the effects of depression.

I have a friend/family member who suffers from depression. How can I support them?

This is a question we all asked when a loved one is dealing with depression.

Be patient

Someone suffering from depression usually wants to get better because their depression not only causes them mental suffering, but also because it adversely affects the people around them, especially family and friends. Psychotherapy for depression cannot be rushed. For a person suffering with depression, it is important to understand that learning to think more optimistically and come to the realization that what you do does make a difference, will take time. But, the outcome is worth the effort. Being supportive of the person suffering with depression, by letting the person know you will be there for them as long as it takes, can help.

In a situation like this, where our mental health is compromised, there is no easy cure-all. But, there is help! Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), created by clinical psychologists, can help to end the cycle of negative thoughts and feelings.
