Types of anxiety disorders

The term anxiety disorder actually refers to a number of different disorders. Here are six major types:

Generalized Anxiety Disorder – constant worrying or feelings of dread, pervasive in your life and your actions

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder – thoughts or behaviors which reoccur and seem out of one’s control, often accompanied by intense worry if the prescribed action or ritual is not performed

Phobia - an extreme, irrational fear of an object, place, event, situation or activity

Social Anxiety - a fear of being humiliated, judged or seen by others in a negative light resulting in avoidance of social situations

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) – suffering from severe, debilitating anxiety following exposure to a traumatic event
